Two night getaway
We were not at all worried about the rustic description in the listing. This is a charming stone cottage in a peaceful location. It's in a magnificent part of Scotland, close to a beautiful loch with historic woodland nearby. It's unusual to stay in an estate such as this, with it's interesting old school buildings in close proximity. Dall House is very grand too. The cottage's beds are very comfortable and have electric blankets. We met the friendly owner by chance and the tame pigeons too. He gave us useful information about the local area including the Ice Age forest nearby.
However, in contrast to the other holiday properties we rented in the Highlands (in a similar price range,) some simple improvements could be made. Given the cottage's stone construction, the interior was very cold in April. The electric heaters are functional, but expensive to run - around £20 over two nights to heat the bedrooms, lounge and kitchen. The lounge has a fireplace, but we had no facility to light a fire upon arrival - the log basket was empty. We had not thought to purchase peat or logs during our long journey from the west coast. An option to purchase fuel on site would have been useful for those potentially arriving after local shops have closed.
Again, in contrast to similar holiday properties, the cottage did not have essentials such as washing up liquid, bottled water, toilet rolls, etc. Luckily, some things had been left by previous occupants. After the first night, we detoured to a shop for essentials.
This property has not been extensively modernised - this wasn't a concern for us. However, it should have been thoroughly cleaned before our arrival. Had this been the case and a few essentials provided (including some peat or logs,) this would have been a four star review without doubt.
Thank you for your review and the honesty about the cottage and location, I am sorry there were a couple of things that were not done to our usual standard and will take this up with housekeeping as we always have either the fire lit on arrival or leave enough logs and kindling to start it off. There definitely should have been washing up liquid and toilet rolls and some essentials, so sorry about that. It was nice you added it could have had a 4* review had these things been provided.
Excellent Modernised Cottage, Very Comfortable, Lovely Views and Peaceful
I am the husband of Maureen who made this last minute booking as a surprise.
We loved the cottage and found the tranquility we were looking for with a wonderful outlook and stimulating surroundings.
Always interesting getting to grips with a real fire again which added to the comfort in the sitting room. We were looking for a peaceful setting and this had the magic ingredient "Listen what can you hear? Nothing" but bird song, breezes rippling though the trees and water from a nearby burn.
When wandering around I was followed by a quite fearless pigeon and a white dove, both of whom got very close and were unafraid, the little pigeon taking some breadcrumbs from my hand.
Nearby were other estate cottages and a number of quite modern accommodation blocks and technical workshops. The back story of the accommodation blocks seemed to tell of a previously vibrant period maybe with and outdoor adventure or orienteering role.
The nearby village shop in Kinloch Rannoch had a good choice of items and Pitlochry an easy 30 minute drive a large Co-op, good restaurants and cafes.
If you want peace in a lovely setting staying in a comfortable former estate cottage don't look any further.
A bonus, Fiona made contact before we travelled to the cottage, asking if we wanted any heating turned on, which we welcomed. This meant a warm cottage on our arrival, a nice touch.
Thank you for a nice break from City hustle and bustle.
Perfect getaway from reality
It is as it says. Perfect opportunity to get away from reality. Beautiful cottage in the most stunning of surroundings. If getting back to nature is what you are looking for then this has to tick all the boxes. Second stay in 18 months and was more than satisfied on both occasions. Can't wait for the 3rd adventure.
Wouldn't stay again
When we got to the cottage, it was colder inside than it was outside. Within 5 minutes of being in the cottage, our eldest got very upset and didn't want to stay. There were stains on the carpet, holes in the wall and cracks in some of the windows. The portable heaters didn't even make a difference in the heat. The only thing to keep the children warm was the electric blanket on the bed. We only stayed for one night and left first thing the next morning. We couldn't even shower as there was no hot water and no pressure, not to mention the shower head wasn't connected properly and was facing the door! The place definitely needs updating. We don't think we will be returning here.
We are disappointed that none of these issues were raised during the stay, we always have someone on site to see to any problems. We always light the lounge fire in winter months to welcome guests but if they arrive late at night we cannot keep it going all evening especially if we are told arrival will be around 4pm!
The shower has been checked, and working, we assume the hot water heater was turned off, hence no hot water! We have one heater in the lounge that doesn't work but there is also a storage heater and free standing heater. We have returning guests that appreciate this cute cottage, it is booked throughout the year and gets a little tired due to constant use, and in need of a freshen up before spring which is planned but if it was modernised and perfect it would loose the charm of being a traditional cottage which would be a great shame and we love it just as it is.
Cold cottage and badly maintained outside
The outside of the property is poorly maintained. A broken gutter outside the bedroom window made a lot of noise when it rained overnight. The surrounding school buildings in varying stages of decay mean that if you had children they could not play unattended. The heaters didn't work well and though we were out all day and were quite frugal with electricity use it cost more than £5 a day for electricity. Inside cottage was well stocked and clean. A disappointing stay.
Cute, cozy and remote
Bit spooky neighborhood with abandoned houses, But the cottage itself was a cute, traditional house. I was looking for a remote, yet cozy place in Scottish Highlands and this place just met my expectations.
We are glad the cottage and Scottish Highlands met your expectations. We have some unoccupied properties on the Estate that are awaiting restoration, but its definitely not spooky, think you may have been carried away by too many Halloween movies:)
